Strong first half leads Golden Eagles to win at Porterville

Freshman Luzelena Parks scored a game-high 17 points while sophomore Alejandra Fernandez had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the West Hills College Lemoore women's basketball team to a 65-50 win at Porterville College on Saturday.

The Central Valley Conference win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved the Golden Eagles to 8-17 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

West Hills got off to an early lead, going ahead 16-6 after the first quarter and was up 29-11 at halftime. The Golden Eagles shot 46 percent (25 of 54) from the field for the game and sank 8 three-pointers.

Sophomore Janae Tolbert nearly had a double-double of her own, but had to settle for 10 points and 9 assists. She also added 6 rebounds and 4 steals to her solid night on the court. Sophomore Ashley Anchondo contributed 13 points while sophomore Nicole Mercado chipped in with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Porterville (3-21, 1-7 CVC) was led by 12 points from Breyanna Hernandez.

Just three games remain for West Hills with two of those played at home. The Golden Eagles are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 15) when they host Fresno City College in a 3 p.m. Central Valley Conference game.
